How MedCourse was Founded
I’m Dr James Davidson – founder of MedCourse. I worked for 5 years as a trainee in the NHS, but working hard on the COVID frontline made me take a step back and think about what I wanted from my future. While I loved medicine, my interest in technology, education, and entrepreneurship was leading me away from a traditional career path.
While working I LOVED taking time to learn on courses, conferences, and taster days. I had plenty of study leave (not to mention study budget) and on each new placement would seek opportunities to take a breather and learn something new.
The trouble was, it was infuriatingly difficult to find courses relevant to my interests and level of training!
I knew there were plenty of amazing courses out there, I just didn’t have the time to find them! They were stuck in email chains, hiding on the 8th page of google, and camouflaged among the many posters of the mess advertising board. When I finally found one I liked, I had to tackle the arduous process of paper and email-based course booking.
So, when I made the decision to leave hospital medicine and create something of my own, I set out to make things easier for junior doctors. I wanted to help doctors get away from service provision and acquire new skills.
Thus, MedCourse was born!
On MedCourse you can search and filter a selection of virtual, face-to-face, and on-demand courses relevant to junior doctors practising in the UK.
I developed MedCourse with an amazing troop of friends, colleagues, and trusted advisors, and have ambitions to help modernise postgraduate medical education for the age of the internet.
I hope you find that we are the service you never knew you needed. If it isn’t yet, please get in touch – we are always looking for feedback!
Our Goals
In our first stage of development, the focus is to create something that is free and useful for junior doctors, in order to build a service which provides value to both doctors and course providers. We are not beholden to any shareholders or investors, which gives us more freedom to serve the junior doctor community in the best way we feel is possible.
As the platform grows and creates more opportunities for monetisation, we can move on to our more ambitious long-term goals. We want to remain focused on serving junior doctors specifically, in time becoming a one-stop shop for all of your educational needs outside of training.
When it comes to our core value of transparency, we want to put our money where our mouths are and show you exactly what we’re working towards. In the short term, we are busy working on several projects to:
While we work on improving the site as it is right now, we’re also planning larger projects to convince you to keep coming back! Here are some medium-term objectives we are developing in the background:
As a small business, we can be more agile and responsive to what our audience wants, so our development will ultimately change according to what you want. Once we have the resources, we would like to create a custom-coded platform which better meets the needs of our audience. Other long-term ideas aren’t set in stone, but here are some anyway:
Of course, you know something we don’t – you know exactly what you want. If you have any inspiration you’d like to share with us, please get in touch below!
